Robert Dyas, the worried hardware retailer, intends to more
than double its store empire after directors finish a
management buyout that will save 1,250 employment
opportunities and stave off capable administration. The
99-store retailer, which is supposed to complete a rescue
transaction with its bank, Lloyds Banking Group, later this
week, will recruit Ian Gray as a non-executive chairman of
the company.
Mr. Gray, a turnaround expert, said that Robert Dyas's managing director, Steve Round "needs to take the estate up above 200" stores. The MBO will discontinue the involvement of Change Capital, the non public equity firm which acquired it in 2003, in assisting to run the retailer. Mr. Gray said: "It will state Robert Dyas has a stable future and the management team can definitely take the company forward." Asked how the development would be funded, he said: "We will arrange meeting with the bankers [to discuss it]." Actually, It all started with a fiver, that was how much Robert Dyas had to invest in his fresh business when he came from County Meath in Ireland. The first shop was opened in London in 1872 and by the time of his death at the age of 66 he had opened 18 stores. His sons took over following that, followed by his two grandsons who miserably passed away in 1961 and 2002.
